{Artist Spotlight} Our Interview with Dustin and Karen of Bearded Buffalo Co.

Dustin and Karen are so excited to be part of the Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash, sponsored by Etsy, on November 10 at Fashion Industry Gallery in Dallas. We are excited too! Bearded Buffalo Co. is releasing a new limited-edition scent for their beard balm and oil at the Bash.

Bearded Buffalo Co. is a veteran-owned and operated company. The use natural ingredients and make their products in the USA. These two both work full time and go to school full time in addition to running Bearded Buffalo. We caught up with them recently for quick interview.

Is your shop offering anything new or special at the Bash?

The weekend of the Jingle Bash is kind of the perfect storm of events for us. November 10th is also the Marine Corps birthday and the following day is Veterans Day. Both our owners are veterans and one served in the Marine Corps which makes this pretty significant. We see this as the perfect time to release a new and limited-edition scent of beard balm and oil. We’re calling it “Yeti,” and it will be a great scent for the winter!

What do you most enjoy about working with your team?

We currently have a two-man team. My wife and I. We started this company together after only a few months of dating. It was a scary thing to do, but somewhere in the back of our minds we must have known it would all work out. The trials we faced starting a business together helped us learn a lot about each other and laid a good foundation for our marriage.

Is there a story behind your shop name?

We see our business, including all of our oil and balm scent names as a homage to great men. Men who have had a hand not only in building our country, but also men who have influenced us in our personal lives. One of these great men being Karen’s grandfather. He was part Native American, loved nature and had an affinity for buffalo.

What do you find most challenging about your work?

The most challenging thing about our work is creating new product. We want to provide our customers with awesome products, and we don’t release anything we are not supremely proud of. This takes research, formulating, time, testing and usually more formulating. Though daunting at times, it’s worth it when our customers tell us how much they love our products or what a difference our products have made for them.

Shop from over 100 artists offering unique handmade wares at the Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 10. From original art, home goods, and artisanal soaps to local jewelry designers, leather workers and so much more! Check out the event on Facebook here. And find out how to shop the Bash like a pro here. We’ll see y’all at the Bash!

That's right! The big E is even coming to town to hang out with us at the Jingle Bash. Etsy is the marketplace where people around the world connect to buy and sell unique goods. Their mission is to re-imagine commerce in ways that build a more fulfilling and lasting world.

Etsy Dallas loves Etsy, of course, and we know you'll want to keep up with all they have to share too. You can follow Etsy on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest for all the creative goodness.

Set aside some time between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. November 15, 2014 for the biggest handmade party of the year. It's going to be so much fun!

Save the date: Etsy Craft Party 2014

We are happy to announce our location for the annual Etsy Craft Party is City Craft. The theme this year is all about taking your photographs to new artistic levels. It's BYOP (bring your own photos) but we will have extra photographs for your use, if you don't have prints on hand.

You don't want to miss this little shindig. It's 7 to 9 p.m. on June 6. You can RSVP now for Etsy Craft Party 2014: Recapture. Enjoy an evening of food, drinks and crafty fun. We can't wait to see what you create.

CRAFT PARTY! June 20th at CityCraft

It's that most awesome time of year again--the time of year we celebrate Etsy's birthday!

This year, we are pairing up with the fun folks at CityCraft. The theme is CRAFT FOR COMMUNITY, so we knew Callie & the CityCraft gals would be the perfect partner as they are also dedicated to crafting for good.

Please join us for an evening of craft and fun, June 20, from 7-9. Please RSVP (though the event is FREE!) so we can make sure there's enough crafty goodness to go around. http://etsycraftparty-etsydallas.eventbrite.com/

Spring Awakening: In the Pink

It's no secret I love pink. Just take a peek at my logo and many of the things in my shop, Jenni20 Designs.

And though spring means cute baby animals, tender shoots of plants pushing out of the dirt, trees blossoming in riotous colors before leafing out in green, green, and more green, spring is also a great time to bring back pink. After all, pink and green are great partners, no?

Even if pink isn't your thing (although I can't believe it!), I'm sure you know and adore someone who loves to live life in the pink. Perhaps you can share some of these blushing beauties with them.

Click on the photoset below to find out which Etsy Dallas artist made these lovelies!

Curbside crawls that inspire

Earth Month is just days away, and Liz of Creative Input By Liz is sharing a little bit of her upcycling inspiration.

Reduce, recycle, reuse. I hear these words a great deal, maybe because I am totally immersed in the movement. I started recycling when I would have to lug a trunkful to any place that recycled. Luckily, today we have curbside pick-up. Speaking of curbsides, I do a curbside crawl on trash days looking for items people consider disposable. My son’s solid wood dresser is from one of my hunts. If I can’t use it, I donate it.

This habit of hunting for recyclables or items to repurpose has transferred to my art. My favorite sources are estate sales, resale stores, Etsy, and eBay. I also gather inspiration from my search. I consider my ventures to be of divine providence since I have no idea what I will find that will spark my imagination.

I look for metals in silver-plated trays, copper, brass, and colorful tins. I haven’t stumbled upon anyone with well-priced sterling but I keep my hopes up. I cut up these metal finds to create upcycled jewelry. I also search for pre-vinyl records, books, broken jewelry, belts, vintage wallpaper, and anything I can cut up, use for texture, put in resin or use as a tool.

The photo above is of a piece made from a cookie tin with some great designs and colors. The circular bracelet below was made from a belt and what used to be a copper vase. The cross piece is riveted onto a portion of a brass planter.

Jacky Sylvie with Hi Fi Jewelry brings her love of music to the world of upcycling with her fantastic necklace made from vinyl records. The records I use come from the early 1900s, before vinyl, and are much thicker. I picked up a batch from an estate sale thinking they were worth a bundle. No such luck. Somehow I decided to soften them in the oven and cut them with cookie cutters to create pendants. The one below is my favorite.

The metals I scour for are anything from trays and vases to brass planters. There are some silver plated pieces that are plated onto copper. I particularly remember large compote I found with a beautiful bird and flower design. I raced home to cut it while preserving the design. It will make a beautiful necklace for the Etsy Dallas Spring Bash in April.

Etsy Dallas is happy to launch our 2012 SHOP HOP: The Jammie Bash.

You know and love our Handmade Bash shopping extravaganzas, but we haven't seen you since the Cinco de Mayo Spring Bash (and we miss you). So come back to us, dear friends.

Be a part of the SHOP HOP and The Jammie Bash.

Yep, that's right, folks. Don't fight traffic and the holiday crush. Shop right at home in your jammies. (Or, if we're honest with each other, we all know you'll be shopping at work on those super-speedy internet connections--but wear jammies to work at your own risk.)

While our SHOP HOP will never take place of the big bash, we'd like to thank you for supporting the handmade movement and our Etsy Dallas member shops. Buy for those you love, and our gift to you is a chance to gift yourself, too!

Beginning on Black Friday and going through Christmas Eve (11.23-12.24), any purchase made in an Etsy Dallas Member's etsy.com shop will make you eligible to win one of TWO (2) $50 Etsy Gift Cards, courtesy of Etsy Dallas.

All you need to do is keep track of your purchases and enter at the contest site. Enter the Giveaway.

If your number is selected at random, and your purchase is verified, we'll send you a $50 Gift Card to use at any etsy.com shop (although we hope you'll want to head back to one of our members' shops!).

So do some window shopping at our members' shops and get those wish lists in order! You can find a list of us and links to our shops here: Etsy Dallas Team Members.

UPDATE: 11.19.2012: Etsy Inc. has gifted us with 6 more gift cards to give away, making the 2012 SHOP HOP: The Jammie Bash payout over $275 to 8 lucky people!

The Fine Print:

West Elm + Etsy Handmade Holiday Workshop Recap

You know that person whose house looks effortlessly modern and put together, yet livable and cozy? Chances are she shops at West Elm. And what modern home would be complete without a few handmade touches? West Elm has teamed up with Etsy, the online marketplace for handmade goods, to create a one-night shopping experience featuring five hand-selected local Etsy vendors situated in the store in 37 cities around the country on Dec. 1.

Etsy Dallas volunteers led shoppers in making holiday ornaments for a tree to be donated to the Family Place. You could make one for the tree, one for yourself, and take a template home to share with a friend. We had a great time meeting folks, folding paper, and getting in the holiday spirit.

Thanks to Etsy for providing the supplies for the craft and to West Elm for hosting us.
